The Hazel Davis Literacy Legacy Scholarship
Books and reading have been important to me since I was a very young child. My childhood home was filled with books and my father, in particular, was a voracious reader whose example I have followed all my life. My mother had hoped to attend college, but being a daughter in a large family in the immediate aftermath of World War II made this dream financially unattainable for her. Although neither of my parents had a college degree, the importance of education was instilled in my siblings and me, and we were all given the opportunity to earn our degrees and have successful professional careers.
Choosing librarianship and higher education as a professional path was a natural for me, and I have been supremely fortunate to have enjoyed a long and rewarding career as the Faculty Chair for Library Services at Rio Salado College. In establishing this scholarship, I am hoping to assist Rio Salado students who are doing well in their studies but need help with paying for college, as a small way of “paying it forward” and helping them to attain their life goals.
